Perish Twice by Robert B. Parker

Sunny is hired to protect Mary Lou Goddard, a feminist activist who is being stalked. Soon, Gretchen, a research assistant at Mary Lou's office is shot and everybody suspects a case of mistaken identity. Then, the murder suspect (and suspected stalker) dies. He seems to have committed suicide. Sunny suspects Mary Lou did not tell everything she knew about the stalker and does not believe the man would have commited suicide. Mary Lou is officially a lesbian, but Sunny discovers she had a relationship with her so-called stalker.
While the police think the case is closed, Sunny wants to find out what really happened and learns that Gretchen was conducting a study about prostitution. She even got to met some of the girls in the Boston area.
Simultaneously, Sunny's sister realizes her husband is having an affair, while Sunny's best friend, Julie (married with children), cheats on her husband.
