A Savage Place by Robert B. Parker

Rachel Wallace calls Spenser for a job in LA. He flies there to meet his new client.
Candy Sloan, a TV reporter, has uncovered a scandal in the movie industry. Mickey, a stuntman, has seen the producer paying-off to a suspicious guy.
Candy needs a bodyguard. Spenser's function will be 'predominantly protective' since she is the one pursuing the suspects and the story. The first night he stays at his hotel and she gets beat up when meeting a possible informant. Spenser moves in with her to protect her, and even sleeps with her.
The pair gets kicked out of the studio when interviewing the boss and tailed by two thugs (the car chase is movie quality) in the streets of LA.
Soon the only witness in the pay-off gets killed, and the LAPD questions Candy and Spenser, (neither of them gives away any of the information Candy has uncovered). Candy, in a last manipulative move, gets involved with one of the suspects to extract more information. Unfortunately, she is found out and killed. Spenser then takes over the investigation.
