Book Review By Elissa Hadley Conklin
Joan Crawford: Hollywood Martyr by David Bret

This is an unauthorized, sexually explicit biography of Joan Crawford. The author bases his "Information" on a close friendship with Marlene Dietrich in her later years. Since she and Miss Crawford never made a film together and had little or no contact with one another during their careers in Hollywood, as well as the fact that they were movie queen rivals, his source is not one that I would consider reliable. There is NOTHING in this book that is anything more than the rumors and conjecture that have always followed Miss Crawford's life.
Not only is the book boring, as it unfolds through the chronolgy of the plots of her movies, but the author focuses more on his own personal lusting for the hunky gay men that he purports Gable, Georger Cukor ,the first three husbands of Crawford's, and virtually every silent film star and director to be. Miss Crawford seems to have had sex with every man, woman, and child that she metin Hollywood, with the exception of Lassie, and that is questionable.
