This book is set in Georgia at the time of the first American gold rush in the 1820s. Cal Parker is a young engineer who has come to Auraria, a booming gold camp. He has brought his younger brother Jason with him. Cal is there to build a dredging machine for the gold areas. He gets on the wrong side of two toughs who are picking on a young Indian boy. From then on they vow their revenge. They hook up with a half-breed Cherokee--and all of them want to know where the Cherokees have hidden their stash of gold. However, the Cherokees aren't telling because they know they are going to have to leave Georgia soon because of the treaty. The Cherokee intend to do things the white man's way and buy property of their own choosing. But Bruno, Big Mike, and Charley Luke have different plans. They kidnap the young Indian boy and Jason to try to lure the Indians into telling them about the gold. At the same time the army has shown up and is busily building stockades in which to round up the Indians. Cal and his friends have to find the boys and at the same time try to make sure the Indians are treated fairly, as they have always been peaceable and easy to live with. In the end, Cal succeeds at both tasks. | ||
