The Places In Between by Rory Stewart

This inspiring story is an account of Rory's travels as he walked across Afghanistan and survived. Rory, a 29 year old writer from Scotland who was educated at Oxford decides to educate the world through his recorded journals of this exploration. In January 2002, after spending well over a year walking across Iran, Pakistan, India and Nepal, Rory decides to walk across Afghanistan even though the Taliban had just been expelled a few weeks back. The author's detailed journey from Herat to Kabul educates the reader of Afghanistan, their customs, the villagers and the unsafe landscape.

Rory carried a backpack with few supplies, covered it with a plastic rice bag and wore Afghanistan clothes to blend into the environment. He carried a homemade wooden stick and was given a mastiff dog on his journey he named Babur. The dog became his constant companion and together they climbed the dangerous terrain in heavy snow. Rory was able to communicate to the villagers a little by speaking Persian and many times that saved his life from hostile men. He relays his interesting encounters with the villagers, security officials, dislocated Taliban officials, foreign aid workers, and some rural headmen of different villages.

Rory's journey ended after a 20 month walk in Afghanistan and goes home to Scotland awaiting the arrival of his dog, Babur, who was flying on a different flight. Unfortunately the dog's health gave out and he never made it home to his master. He began this wonderful story collecting all his data from his journals.
