The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau

The lights of Ember, powered by a generator in pipeworks, are starting to flicker. These lights provide the only light for the city, which has a dark brown sky. Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, who are both 12, live in the city of Ember. When Lina gets the dreaded job of pipeworks and Doon draws messenger, the two decide to trade. Little do they know what's about to happen.
While completing her messenger duties, Lina starts to find out things about Ember. She starts to wonder what's in the darkness at the outskirts of town. And Doon is starting to find out things too. Why are the lights going out now, after they've been working so well for as long as anyone can remember? The two start to search for answers.
