The Book Of Atrix Wolfe by Patricia A. McKillip

This is the story of the effects that an ancient war waged in anger and rage had on the life of many people, including humans and magical beings.
Atrix Wolfe was a great and mighty mage. Then the invaders descended upon his kingdom. He refused to help the king in war but the king promised him that he would not harm Atrix's hometown (Pelucir) if he helped so he did but later the king turned from his promise. He prepared to attack his kingdom and waged a bloody battle killing hundreds of men. Defending his people through magic, Atrix Wolfe created a legendary creature which was forged out of his hatred and knew nothing but hatred. He was named the Hunter since he was a savage, uncontrollable force that brought doom and destruction everywhere and to everything. He destroyed both armies and killed his beloved king of Pelucir.
Now the story begins twenty years later with the younger son of the king studying in Chaumenard which is the magic school. He unintentionally calls back the hunter from the prison of spells in which Atrix had bound him. Atrix Wolfe spent all these years living among the wolves as one of them and now he has been called upon by the Queen of the Wood. She asks him to find her daughter, who vanished into the human world during the massacre he caused. No one has seen the princess since. At that time she had only been a baby but the twenty years had taken their toll on the girl and though she had grown older she had not done so as the princess she truly was but as the Kitchen girl at the Castle of Pelucir where she washed dishes. She cannot speak, her eyes are full of sadness and her name is Saro.
The story moves on to how Atrix helps the young prince of Pelucir to escape the deathly clutches of the Hunter and then the return of Saro to her own realm where her mother awaits her.
