| Andrew Terwillger, Lord Dugdale, has returned to London after securing his finances from a crooked clerk who worked for him. Eager to resume the ways of a notorious rogue along with his friends known as the "Terrible Threesome", he instead finds himself alone, since his two friends have fallen in love and married, which he vows he will never do.
Olivia Banning has traveled to London with her Aunt Agatha, who claims the spirit of her dead love is beckoning her to the city. Olivia, who is worried for her beloved Aunt's sanity, has agreed to follow her Aunt and help her search for Lord Pinkwater's ghost so she can keep her Aunt out of trouble. When Olivia and her Aunt arrive at Lord Dugdale's for a soiree, Olivia finds herself fasinated with Andrew's good looks, even though she has decided she would rather marry a simple country gentleman. As she and her Aunt wait to be announced, a large urn falls and almost hits Lord Dugdale and Olivia's aunt believes that it is a sign that Lord Pinkwater is in the house. When Aunt Agatha declares she must search the house for the ghost, Olivia declares she will do it to keep her Aunt out of trouble. As she searches the rooms, she hears a set of voices and ducks into the first available room to hide, which happens to be Lord Dugdale's bedchamber. As Andrew goes upstairs to visit his bedchamber, he discovers Olivia in his room, smelling his soap, and immediately demands to know what she is doing in his room, thinking she is a thief. Olivia tells him she is searching for a ghost and prompts Andrew to search her, and they are caught in that comproming position, forcing them to wed. As the two settle into marriage, Andrew believes that Olivia deliberately set a trap for him. Olivia is afraid to be married to a rogue, knowing he will break her heart. Andrew and Olivia begin to grow close, and Andrew finally realizes that he has grown to love Olivia. Olivia also has felt her emotion deepen into love for Andrew, but the couple is plagued by the disreputable clerk, who has vowed revenge and death on Andrew. Together, the two must find a way to locate the villain. | ||
