    Kit Singleton is the daughter of an exiled nobleman. When her father dies, her scheming father makes her vow to go back to England and get revenge for his exile. Unwilling to deny a deathbed wish, Kit travels to England and poses as Rose Singleton's niece, not knowing any of her father's background and believing herself to be completely alone in world. Kit begins honor her father's wishes, posing as debutante to the world while in the night she takes on the persona of a Chinese burglar, stealing valuables from the men who supposedly wronged her father.
   Hugo Devenish is the son of and nobleman and a tradesman's daughter. Hugo was an outcast of society until he used his wits and amassed a fortune, making him a very eligible catch. When his nephew declares he is going to marry for money, he decides to investigate the "heiress" he wants to marry, Kit Singleton.
    Hugo believes that Kit is an imposter, lying an inheritance in order to catch a title. Kit wants nothing but to achieve the task her father set for her before leaving England forever, so when Hugo begins to dog her every step, she decides to dump his nephew so he will leave her alone. Despite thier situations, Hugo and Kit become deeply involved, and Hugo realizes all he wants to do is make a home with Kit and create a family. When Hugo realizes the trouble Kit has made for herself, he vows to protect her.
