The Duchess by Jude Deveraux

Claire Willoughby is a very wealthy American heiress, worth about 10M.Her parents have taken her and her younger sister to London for a season where Claire meets Harry Montgomery, Duke of MacArran. Harry has been sent to London to find the American heiress and make her fall in love with him. He succeeds, proposes marriage, and takes Claire back to Scotland to be his Duchess. At Bramley, Harry's castle, she meets Trevelyan whom she believes is a cousin of Harry's who is recovering from a serious illness and whose presence at Bramley is a secret. She and Trevelyn become close and the secrets he carries with him overcome her curiosity. She soon discovers that he is the famous explorer, Captain Frank Baker. He has other secrets that he keeps from her though.

Claire soon discovers that she and Harry have nothing in common. For the most part he ignores her. Harry's mother enters into a power struggle with her. Trevelyn talks to her and befriends her and she falls in love with him.

Trevelyn has many secrets. Why is he at Bramley, why do all who see him treat him such such respect, who are his parents, why does he view life from the sidelines and how does he know so much about life at Bramley? Harry's mother has her secrets too. Why is Harry the only child she dotes upon and how did she become a cripple just to name a few. Everyone at Bramley is eccentric in the extreme. They are all lazy and with no direction. All of this drives Claire to frustration. Will she marry where he heart lies or will she do her duty by her family?
