Jason Dodd is in Galvaston on business and he is also trying to prove that Simon Gault, a local shipowner, is responsible for his partner's death years before. As Jason goes about his business, he runs into Elizabeth a the shoddy Easton Hotel. He thinks she is a golddigger in town looking for a wealthy protector, and even as he helps her out of a difficult situation, he still feels a mix of desire and disdain for the beautiful woman.
