The earliest tale in the chronology of Discworld, this book tells of Twoflower, a tourist from Bes Palargic on the Counterweight Continent. Circumstances (mainly, the burning down of the Broken Drum tavern and much of the city of Ankh-Morpork) throw him together with Rincewind, the world's most inept wizard, and the two of them travel across the planet, introducing the reader to the Temple of Bel-Shamharoth (the Soul Eater), Wyrmberg (the upside-down mountain, where dragons live), and the very Rim of Discworld. They are pursued by Twoflower's Luggage, a carnivorous box with hundreds of feet and gnashing teeth. As always, DEATH makes a few appearances, and there sly references to everyone from Shakespeare to Laurel & Hardy. | ||
