The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham

Nobody knows where the triffids came from but they were found to be high in oil so were grown and farmed. One day however a meteor shower leaves the entire population of earth, except for a few isolated cases, completely blind. Now it is time for the triffids to take over. William Mansen had his eys bandaged after surgury so missed the blinding meteor shower. He roams the city helping out the blind until he meets Josella, a woman who also has kept her sight. Together they escape and venture out till they reach Shirning farm and set up a life for themselves there.
