Peters introduces Amelia Peabody, a sharp, somewhat snippy heroine of a soon-to-be-successful series set mostly in Egypt during the last two decades of the 19th century. Peabody, quick with her umbrella as well as her mind and mouth, meets her future husband, imperious but good-hearted archaeologist Radcliffe Emerson, in this story and solves a murder mystery as well as working alongside Emerson on the dig. A ghost seems to be haunting the work site, scaring away the Arab laborers and occasionally killing one. Amelia's rescue of "fallen" but basically good woman Evelyn to be her companion on a trip through Egypt will also bear future relational fruit. | ||
