Daine, the orphaned daughter of a hedgewitch is taken on a as a horse driver for her ability with animals as well as her ability with a crossbow. But when the party meets up with Numair, a great mage, he reveals that Daine is more than just good with animals. She has a wild magic that gives her control over the animals. He helps her to develop her skills to control her magic over the course of the journey. A great threat has risen to the land of Tortall as the mages of Carthak have awakened a host of mythical creatures from another realm and are using them to wage all out war on Tortall. Daine must put her new skills to use along with the skills of Numair and Alanna the champion female warrior of tortall to fend of this threat to their homeland.
