The book starts off with the main character, Gabriella, as a child. We learn that she is physically beaten by her mother frequently. Her Dad doesn't do anything and leaves them. This continues years later until she is almost a teen. Her mother abandons her at a coventry with nuns. She then has to adjust her lifestyle. She grows up with these nuns and makes good friends with them. She is known to be sweet, disciplined, obeying and hardworking. She never opens up to many people. Later when she's 18 she moves out on her own and makes a living working at small restaurants. She meets a young priest, although their relationship doesn't work out. She also meets a couple of other people who become quite significant to her. In the end she finds herself and relizes that what her mother did to her as a child isn't her fault.
