Fern, a farm girl, is given a pet pig, which she names Wilbur. She has many happy times with her new pet while it is being fattened for sale to the market. When Fern discovers that Wilbur will be sold for food, she is
distraught until an apparent miracle occurs. A spider, Charlotte, who has become friends with Wilbur, weaves a wonderful message in her web: “SOME PIG.” Other, similar messages appear in the spider's web, and Wilbur's owner takes him to the fair, where Wilbur wins a ribbon for the best pig shown. When they return to the farm, Charlotte announces that she is due to have babies but may not live long enough to see them, because she is very old. Soon after Wilbur takes Charlotte's egg sack home with him, the spider dies. In the spring, the eggs hatch, and hundreds of Charlotte's babies leave the farm, to find their way in the world. Three remain behind, and the spider's children remind Wilbur of Charlotte, a friend whose kindness and quick wit saved his life. | ||
