In the opening tale of Harry Harrison's legendary Stainless Steel Rat, Slippery Jim diGriz is one of the few remaining criminals in a pacified society. However, the police finally catch up to him and press him into the service of the interplantary police, and he soon finds himself hurling headlong into searching for a powerful but extremely missing spaceship. He manages to escape the service, only to be shot by a woman that he had hoped to save. And well, things get pretty wild for old Slippery Jim from there on out, with him battling captors, insidious political factions that stole the missing spaceship, and finally manages to track down and reconcile with the woman who shot him.
