The Legend of Deathwalker - Drenai Tales 7 by David Gemmell

Druss was a legend in his own time, having fought and won innumerable battles over the sixty years of his life. However, his life was fast coming to an end, his wife had died, and he sought seclusion in the mountains far from the glory and riches that he could have enjoyed. However, far from his seclusion and fear, the Nadir warrior-king Ulric had united the fierce tribes and rampaged across the world, vanquishing one enemy after another, dreaming of building the greatest empire the world had ever since- upon the ashes of the old and stagnant Drenai Empire. He sensed that he had one last battle to fight at the fortress of Dros Delnoch, which guarded the mountain pass which Ulric needed to sweep across the world. Meanwhile, others such as Rek and Virae traveled to Dros Delnoch to participate in the coming battle, finding love in each other's arms. The defenders were outnumbered fifty to one, but surely Druss, the Drenai hero of forty years could inspire a new generation to greatness?
