The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey

Helva was born deformed, and her governement decides to give her a chance to do something. so they create a spaceworthy scout ship for her to control, literally as she was connected with the ship almost as if it was an artificial arm or leg. Such ships are paired with 'brawn' - a normal human to keep them company.
