In the Hand of the Goddess - Song of the Lioness 2 by Tamora Pierce

Alanna is a squire in this book and Jonathan is her knight and master. While having an affair with Jon, she finds out Jon's cousin is plotting something against the rest of the royal family. Alanna figures out he will be next in line for the throne. As soon as she is knighted she finds what she was looking for and finds herself in a duel to the death.
