Book Review By Mark Simpson
Badge and Buckshot: Lawlessness in Old California by John Boessenecker

A great account of some of the famous outlaws and criminals in California during the second half of the 19th Century. Author John Boessenecker splits the book into a series of short histories about criminals and the crimes they committed. Substantial attention is also given to the lawmen who hunted for these criminals and their careers in law enforcement. Boessenecker provides detail about the small towns where these crimes took place, and the social conditions in each town. The book provides a source of information about infamous criminals and lawmen who are often forgotten in accounts of 19th Century California history.
