Sara Crewe's beloved father, Captain Crewe, sends her to a boarding school in London. He returns to India, loses all of his wealth, and dies. Sara is devastated, and to make matters worse, the newly orphaned girl is treated like a servant by Miss Minchin, the school's greedy headmistress.
