Book Review By Thomas Head
On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers

This is a book about a man named John Chandagnac, who after the death of his father a (puppeteer in Europe) has traveled to the new world to confront an (until recently)unknown uncle who has seemed to made off with the family inheritence. On the journey he gets to know a young woman named Beth Hurwood and her father an Oxford Professor. A day from port their ship is waylaid by pirates, and with the apparent help of the professor and his assistant, the ship is captured, the captain killed, and Chandagnac forced to join the pirate crew. We soon discover a devious plot being concocted by Professor Hurwood involving his dead wife, and living daughter, as well as the sinister mechanizations of Ed Scratch aka Blackbeard the pirate. And Chandagnac now known as 'Jack Shandy' does his best to stop these evil men, as well as rescue Beth Hurwood. Powers weaves historical fact with magic, ghost ships, and the fountain of youth.
