Book Review By Judy Berman
The Saskiad by Brian Hall

Saskia is an intelligent, quirky twelve-year-old who lives with her mother in an rural New York commune that is past its prime. Wrapped up in books and fantasies, Saskia is lonely and has only the tiresome younger children of the commune with which to spend her time. Everything changes when beautiful Jane Singh becomes the new girl in Saskia's class at school. Saskia and Jane are fast friends, but their intimate relationship starts to erode when Saskia's estranged father shows up to take the girls on trip. Saskia's jealousy of Jane begins to surface, and the two girls end their friendship. Still obsessed with her perfect ex-best friend, Saskia endeavors to become just like Jane.
