Book Review By Debbie
Fever Dreams by Laura Leone

Madeleine Barrington, of the Barrington Food Products Barringtons, had just finished several frustrating days in Montedora City, Montedora, South America. She was determined to sell her family's plantation and leave the primitive country of Montedora behind her.

Unfortunately, years of neglect and political unrest have kept her family's plantation from prospering and Madeleine knows that it will be hard to get rid of. When Madeleine's flight is indefinitely delayed, she is stuck in a rundown hotel in Montedora City, sipping a horrible drink and contemplating what got her into this mess in the first place. When Ransom first sets eyes on the beautiful blonde sitting forlornly at the bar, he knows that she is someone he wants to get to know better. A lot better. Madeleine isn't sure what to make of Ransom and starts to brush him off, but she is inexplicably drawn to him and decides to spend the night with him. It was the most incredible night of passion that Madeleine has ever had - and Ransom feels the same way. However, Madeleine is embarrassed at her lack of control with Ransom and just cannot face him so she sneaks out early in the morning without telling Ransom who she is.

Ransom is furious that his angel left without revealing her identity and tries to find her, but he fails. He vows to leave Montedora behind him and never go back. However, when Marino Security International hires him to act as a bodyguard for a Madeleine Barrington while she completes some business in Montedora, he is forced to take the job. When he discovers that his angel is none other than Madeleine Barrington, he is determined to keep his distance and to let her know that she means nothing to him. Madeleine is stunned at Ransom's arrival and is terrified that he will tell her family about their one night stand. When they arrive in Montedora, she breathes a sigh of relief and gets down to business. But when President Veracruz' military advisor, Escalante, stages a coup, the whole country rises up in rebellion. Madeleine and Ransom find themselves in the middle of a country with no friends and no one to rely on but each other. As they struggle to escape from Montedora, Ransom and Madeleine come to realize that there is more to their love than a one night stand...

This was an enjoyable contemporary romance featuring two strong willed people who started their relationship at the wrong point and the wrong time, but were able to work it out anyway. Madeleine was a particularly engaging heroine as she was practically perfect and never realized how much her striving for perfection alienated her family and those around her. I liked that Ransom loved her because she wasn't perfect and that he taught her that it was okay to make mistakes and get support from those who love you. The supporting characters were also well developed and fun to get to know. The setting was a little too stereotypical poor South American country for me and so the plot was a bit farfetched, but it is a romance, after all. I would have liked to have seen a bit more romance between the two main characters and a bit less abrupt ending, but this book is still well worth your time to find a copy!
