Quoting from press accounts, she shows how, up to the fall of the Soviet Union, the liberal establishment maintained that we had no choice but to co-exist with the Soviets or face nuclear annialiation. When President Ronald Reagan took a hard line and insisted on winning the Cold War he was portrayed in the press as a madman who was risking war. But, following the collapse of the Soviet Union during the first Bush administration, the media has downplayed Reagan's success by portraying the Soviet Union as a weak giant on the verge of collapse. The fact is, it was Reagan's hard line and arms build up that drove the Soviet Union to its ultimate collapse. Similarily, after a half a century of defending the patriotism of individuals like Alger Hiss, Henry Dexter White, the Rosenbergs and others and demonizing their critics, the liberal establishment virtually ignores the revelations in the recently declassified "Verona Tapes" and newly released KGB archives both of which show these individuals to have been paid agents of the Soviet Union working to assist the Soviet Union against the U.S. The book is well written and makes a lively read. It is thought provoking and well documented. Liberals will probably instinctively reject the book's thesis, but, thanks to the clear arguements and supporting research in this book, it will be harder for them to dismiss the Conservative position out of hand as the Liberals did during the McCarthy and Vietnam eras. | ||
