The Poet's Wedding by Antonio Skármeta

In the island of Gema, in the Adriatic Sea, Jeronimo Franck, a wealthy man nicknamed "the Poet", proposes to Alia Emar, the most beautiful girl on the island. Nonetheless, Esteban Coppeta, descendant of a local hero, does not like the idea, for Alia has been his platonic love. A group, led by Esteban's brother, kill Austrian soldiers who were trying to recruit people at Gema.
Esteban and Alia become closer, making her doubt her upcoming marriage, while Austrians come back to take revenge.
