Book Review By Megan E. Davis
Darkness by Chase Howard Webb

After being in a car accident that caused his blindness, Joe Tirey hangs out at the police station every day waiting for the man who caused the accident be brought in.

Kit, Joe's sister, tries to convince him to give it up. She wants him to know that she and Joe's former girl friend Ruth care about him, but he insists he doesn't want pity or help from anyone.

Joe reveals that he has broken his promise not to let the newspapers get a hold of his story. Kit is upset, but Joe thinks someone may turn in the man after reading the story.

When Joe is out of the room, the man, Paul Curtis, arrives. He tells Kit that he wants to explain everything--that he doesn't hate Joe, and that he wants to make sure he's all right.

After Joe threatens him, he realizes that Curtis suffered injury from the accident as well--he is missing both his hands. Curtis leaves and Joe vows that he will show everyone he doesn't need to be pittied.
