After the heist, Mal pulls a burn on Parker and the other gang members, stealing the money and Parker's wife and shooting Parker before setting the hideout ablaze. Parker survives the conflagration, only to be picked up by the cops for vagrancy. Cut to a year later. Parker has realized his escape from the prison farm he was sentenced to as a vagrant, killing a guard in the process, and has pursued Mal to New York City. Parker doesn't want much, just his share of the thirty grand...and Mal Resnick's head. But it's not that simple. Mal used the money to buy his way into membership in "the Outfit," a nationwide crime syndicate, and the bosses of the Outfit sees no reason to give the money back.
