Over on the Dry Side by Louis L'Amour

Doby Kernohan shares the story of how he and his father got the old Chantry place. When they stumbled upon the house, Clive Chantry was dead on the doorstep and the Mowatt gang was responsible. Mowatt and his men were convinced that Clive had buried a treasure somewhere on his ranch. They were determined to run the Kernohan's off the place so they could search for the treasure in peace. Then Owen Chantry, Clive's brother, showed up and the deck was reshuffled. Owen was determined to find his brother's treasure himself while helping the Kernohan's keep the place. But the deck was still stacked against them and they all hoped the could live long enough to enjoy what treasures they already had.
