The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp

The Story of the Trapp Family Singers
Maria Augusta Trapp
Doubleday, 1957, 312 pp.
ISBN: 0060005777

This book was originally published in 1949 and is the first of many books written by Maria von Trapp. Both the Broadway musical "The Sound of Music" and the movie by the same name were based upon this book.

The book is easy to read and describes the family's experiences in pre-war Austria which was depicted in "The Sound of Music". But, whereas "The Sound of Music" ends with the family hiking over the mountain to freedom, this book continues the story to tell what happened after they left Austria. How they supported themselves by giving concerts in Europe and their efforts to get to the U.S. just as war was starting in Europe thereby ending their concert tours there. Their struggles to survive and launch their singing career in the U.S. is also covered.

The tone of the book is very optimistic reflecting the family's faith in God and in each other as they seek to survive in a world in chaos.
