Mado, a young French painter, returns to her island home of Le Devin after her mother's death in Paris. What she returns to is a home and town that is falling apart, and a father who seems to be beyond her reach, never uttering a word. Her home, Les Salants, is falling into the sea, while the town's rival, La Houssiniere, is prospering.
