Borden Chantry by Louis L'Amour

Borden Chantry had temporarily given up on his ranching to take on the marshal's badge. At first the job was locking up drunks and chasing down a horse thief or two but then he found a man murdered on the street. Chantry needed to track down the killer and it became clear that it was one of the townspeople. As Chantry gathers clues, the murderer gets nervous and starts to kill off anyone who might lend Chantry a hand. Time is running short as the killer won't stop at anything to keep from getting caught and Chantry is next on his murderous list!
