The third book of the Earth's Children series opens on Ayla and Jondalar joining a tribe of cro-magnons called the mamouth hunters. They are welcomed and Ayla catches the eye of a mamouth hunter named Ranec. Because of her clan (neanderthal) upringing, Ayla believes that she has no choice and when a man shows interest in her she must submit to his will. Ranec is a good man and Ayla cares for him, but she is in love with Jondalar. Meanwhile, a brokenhearted Jondalar believes that Ayla has lost interest and rejected him. After a long winter of misunderstandings, Jondalar decides to leave the mamouth hunters, and Ayla must decide whether she wants to stay with the mamouth hunters and marry Ranec, or leave with Jondalar. | ||
