Meridon by Philippa Gregory

The conclusion of the Wideacre Trilogy focuses on the daughter of Julia Lacey. Just before she died (in The Favored Child) Julia gave her baby daughter to a family of gypsies to protect her from the Wideacre curse. That child, Meridon has grown up with the gypsies, but feels out of place, and dreams of an estate called "Wide". When Meridon and her "sister" are sold to the circus they travel around the country. It is in this way that Meridon first sees Wideacre, and realizes that this is the place she dreamed of. Meridon is recognized as a Lacey and the heir to Wideacre, and taken in. Now, formerly a child of poverty, Meridon has come into wealth and privilege. She also comes into contact with ruthless people willing to trick her into giving them her home. In a new position of power Meridon musst decide what kind of squire she will be: will she help the inhabitants of the estate or will she help herself? She must also discover a way of living on Wideacre, yet avoiding the curse that claimed the lives of her mother and grandmother.
