Mirror, Mirror by Gregory Maguire

This retelling of the Snow White story takes place in Italy in 1502. A Spanish widower and his daughter move to Italy, where they become entangled with the wealthy Cesare Borgia and his sister, Lucrezia. They send the widower, Don Vincente, on a quest for a mythical branch from the tree of knowledge, and he is forced to leave his daughter, Bianca, at their mercy. Bianca doesn't know that Cesare and his sister have an incestuous relationship, but when she catches the eye of Cesare, she unwittingly envokes the wrath of Lucrezia, who order a hunter to murder Bianca. The hunter has pangs of conscience and warns Bianca, telling her to run away into the woods. For several years, Bianca sleeps in the woods. When she awakes she discovers that she is surrounded by seven stones who are actually men (magical creature). These seven men are looking for an eighth, a brother who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Bianca makes her home with these men, but when Lucrezia learns that Bianca is still alive, she decides to find Bianca and murder her herself.
