Enduring Love by Ian McEwan

Joe Rose and his longtime girlfriend Clarissa are embarking on a romantic reunion picnic when they witness/participate in a disaster. A hot-air balloon is out of control, the lives of an old man and young boy in it are in danger. Joe and several other strangers run to assist, but their efforts result in tragedy--one of the men who runs to help out falls and is killed. While assisting, Joe comes into contact with Jed Parry, a young man who is a religious fanatic. What follows is either a story of Parry becoming obsessed with Joe, convinced they are in love with each other--or a story in which Joe is obsessed with the idea that Parry is obsessed with him. Whichever way the obsession runs, it puts a strain on Joe's relationship with Clarissa and puts his life in danger.
