Charlie and Beth are a pair of twin sisters on the run from their conniving uncle who is plotting to more or less sell them off in marriage to two highly undesirably types. In order to confuse their searchers, they hatch a plan - one of them dresses as a boy to throw the dogs off their scent.

Enter Jeremy, Lord Radcliff, handsome, serious, and rich and powerful into the bargain. He, to Charlie and Beth's dismay, is determined to shelter the pair of "brother and sister" under his wing. As his relationship with the pair grows, he becomes gradually more and more perturbed by the strange feelings that he experiences whenever near that young man Charlie. That is, of course, until he realises that Charlie isn't really a young man at all...
