In 1792, Elizabeth Middleton, a 29 year old well educated spinster leaves her home in England to live on her father's lands in upstate New York and be a school teacher. However, on her arrival, Elizabeth learns that her father has no intention of starting a school, and that he has brought her to America so that she can find a husband, preferably the town's wealthy physician, Richard. Elizabeth, on the other hand, is drawn to Nathanial Bonner, a white man who has been raised as a Mohican indian. Nathanial is a widower and Elizabeth immediately befriends his daughter, Hannah. Throught Nathanial, Elizabeth learns that the Mohicans have a claim to some of her father's lands, and she finds herself siding with them as she grows to accept their culture. Knowing that Richard's primary interest is her father's land, Elizabeth resists his advances. As the love between Elizabeth and Nathanial grows, the couple elope, and the tensions between the town's whites and indians come to a head. | ||
