In fourteenth century England, Margret of Ashbury, wife of a wealthy man, decides that she wants to tell the story of her life. As she cannot read or write, Margret hires a monk, Brother Gregory to write her memoirs for her as she dictates. Gregory thinks that this is the whim of a wealthy woman, but he accepts the job because he needs the money.
Margret begins the story of her life, describing her childhood in a small village, her marriage to a violent and brutal man,and her escape from him. After battling the plague Margret meets a midwife in needs of an assistant, and she discovers that she has a remarkable power for healing. The church thinks that Margret's methods of healing, and delivering babies in particular are bad. She is tried as a witch and forbidden to practice her skill. Eventually, Margret remarries, this time an older wealthy man, who is more a friend and father than a husband. Soon after her narrative is finished her husband dies, and his children from his first marriage invade Margret's life with a dispute about inheritence. Meanwhile, Gregory's wealthy family come in pursuit of him and he and Margret must join together to face the challenges ahead. | ||
