Pilots manuever through a series of subspace/time tunnels, known as the Manifold in attempts to open "windows" near stars many lightyears away. The Order has been given a quest to find the Elder Eddas: the original DNA origins of mankind that can possibly link man to the Ieldra, ancient alien progenitors of the human race. Mallory faces a huge cosmic intelligence alone and then ventures across his home planet's ice seas to find prospective DNA in a biologically altered Neandrathal race.
