The Eight by Katherine Neville

THE EIGHT is a thriller published in 1988.

The action takes place alternately during the French revolution and the early seventies of the 20th century. Mireille and Katy, the feminine heroes of the novel, will have to search for the legendary chess net offered to Charlemagne by the Moors. This chess net is believed to contain a coded formula that would give a terrible power to the one able to decipher it. But our heroes will soon understand that, by doing so, they will have to take part in a gigantic and mortal chess game whose pawns are human.
