In the Hand of the Goddess - Song of the Lioness 2 by Tamora Pierce

Still disguised as a boy and pursuing her dream to become a knight, Alanna is now Prince Jonathan's squire. At the very beginning of the book it becomes apparent that she safeguarded by the Goddess Mother. She acquires several interesting things, like a magical talisman which shows her whether magic is present and a magical cat, to whom she can telepathically talk to.

War breaks out against a neighboring country, Tusaine, which is short-lived but glorious nevertheless. Alanna also experiences her first kiss and her first love, however not with the same man. George, her friend the thief, starts wooing her but it is Prince Jonathan who conquers her heart. With these things on her mind as well as The Ordeal for Knighthood, Alanna also has to deal with Duke Roger of Conte, her greatest enemy ever, who is proving to be as guilty as she has always suspected him to be. Shortly after being knighted, Alanna is finally able to face with him in a clash of swords, before she sets out into the world to seek adventure.
