Flour Babies by Anne Fine

Simon Martin, a young hooligan, is in Mr. Cartwright's class for troubled students. When the science fair comes along, their class gets stuck with Flour Babies. Small six-pound bags of flour that must be cared for at all times. Simon attacks the project with little enthusiasm, but as time passes he grows fond of his flour baby. He also realizes the pressures and strains of being a parent.
