Fiona, Jasmine, Eve, and Grace felt no attachment to one another and even less toward their dead mother. Nonetheless, the four met for the first time in Calliope, South Carolina, for her funeral. Each for secret reasons of her own chooses to stay in their ancestral home when the opportunity arises. British Fiona has had trouble in California and wants a break from the strain. Jasmine, raised and sheltered by her Muslim father but born with her mother's wild streak, wants a taste of adventure. The twins, Eve and Grace, are flate broke and looking for any way to leave the small Iowa town where they live.

However, someone doesn't want Ariel Lloyd's daughters in Calliope. At first, the vandalism seems like pranks. As it escalates, however, the women's neighbors, the Beaumonts and Jamesons step in to help. While doing their best to aid the women, they provide a model for something Fiona, Jasmine, Eve, and Grace have never had: a closeknit, loving family. As the girls open up to one another, as well as the Beaumonts and Jamesons, they learn a lot about life, love, and family. They also learn that not everything is as it seems, and sometimes, even the quietest towns hide someone willing to kill for what they want.
