Book Review By Jennifer Selk
A Place Apart by Paula Fox

Young teen Victoria Finch and her mother move to the small village of New Oxford following the sudden death of her father. Isolated and grieving, Victoria meets a local rich boy, Hugh and in the glow of their intense friendship, begins to feel special and happy again. Arrogant, wealthy Hugh is a social outcast in his own way, and is not well liked by the other people of New Oxford, particularly fellow students.

When he discovers that Victoria is interested in writing, Hugh begins to pressure her to write a play that he intends to produce with the senior class at the high school. When Hugh's interest in Victoria deteriorates into an obsession with her ability to write the play, their friendship begins to fall apart. Desperate to hold onto her special relationship with Hugh, Victoria struggles to reconcile Hugh's arrogance, and his selfish treatment of her with the happiness she felt as his special friend.
