One night in the south of France a car drives quickly down deserted roadways. The driver intends to crash into a thick stone wall of an abandoned farmhouse. His daughter and his best friend are in the car with him. As he drives, he explains in a sustained monologue his reasons for doing what he is doing. Through his rantings we learn of his son, who died at age three, his mistress, with whom he had a sadistic relationship, and we discover that both his wife and his daughter had been having an affair with his best friend. As he speaks, the driver tries to justify his motives, to his passengers, to himself, and to the reader. | ||
