Stephen Winters, a wealthy man, recently home from World War I, is immediatly attracted to Lily Valence. She is the opposite of everything he experienced in the war. She is a beautiful singer, determined to enjoy her life, and forget about the years of hardship that she experienced during the war. She is attracted to Stephen's money and status.

Lily is also in love with the piano player of the troupe with which she performs, though he loves her also he informs her that they can never marry, because he was physically maimed during the war and can never have children.

After her mother dies, Lily is left alone and destitute, and she agrees to marry Stephen out of desperation. But it soon becomes apparent that Stephen can never leave the war fully behind him, and he comes to grips with the terrifying reality of the hidous crime that he committed during a brief stay at a farmhouse in france. As Lily forces herself to stay in a home with Stephen's cold, unfeeling mother, his parapeligic father, and a controlling nurse, she learns that her husband may be the most dangerous member of the family.
