In the summer before seventh grade, twelve year old Iris Diaz-Pinkowitz begins to travel up and down the fire escape outside her new New York City apartment building after the building's elevator breaks. As she begins making friends and enemies among her eccentric neighbours, Iris meets many people in her building who need help. Soon, Iris comes up with a plan to earn some money to buy herself the bra that her mother refuses to acknowledge she needs. She begins charging her neighbours for her services - need help? Just ask Iris!
Iris keeps her business a secret from her mother, who thinks she is spending her days learning how to type, but Iris's eccentric neighbours begin to rely on her and she is soon involved with the crazy Cat Lady and the city's desire to evict her and her numerous cats. This is a story about friendship, growing up, and doing the right thing. | ||
